JDAC MURAL COMPETITION 2018
On September 14, 2018 Hastings College held their third annual mural competition for high school students at the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center. They continued with the same way of choosing a theme this year as they did last year doing a mashup. Ruth Mathson was the lucky Hampton student who drew for the group. The three words drawn: Medusa head, coffee, and art materials. Once students had their three words they began planning their 46"x76" vinyl mural. This competition was all about the students and teacher were to only observe. The students painted with a purpose and worked together to create a successful composition in four hours. While the students worked they caught the eyes of the Grand Island Independent Newspaper and two students were interviewed: Ruth Mathson and Treavar Pekar. The students were in competition against 26 other schools from different class sizes across the state and we finished in the top 6 schools but did not get one of the four coveted blown glass trophies. The top four schools this year were: 1st place- Kearney High School, 2nd place-Thayer Central High School, 3rd place-Hastings High School, and in 4th place-Grand Island Northwest High School. Even though we did not place these students worked hard and I am so proud of what they accomplished! We ended our day of competition with a sweet treat from Dairy Queen as they well deserved it!
Participating Students: Melinda Montoya, Emily Wishman, Ruth Mathson, Treavar Pekar, Jacey Klassen, and Jaylen Arndt.
